Diabetes Prevention, Education & Treatment is my specialty and passion.

Before focusing full time on private practice, Alison Kaplanes, RD worked  for over a decade on a Joslin Diabetes Center team.

Whether you are at risk for diabetes, are newly diagnosed with diabetes or have had diabetes for 20 years, education is an essential part of  keeping you healthy.

According to 2016 data from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC):
- 26 million Americans have diabetes. Over 25% of these people don’t know it!
- More than 1/3 of US adults have pre-diabetes (at risk for diabetes) and 90% of them don’t know it !

Living with Diabetes:

People with diabetes can now  live longer, and improve the quality of their lives when they get the proper education & treatment. If you have diabetes, education is a crucial part of living longer & healthier. A Certified Diabetes Educator can teach you how to:

1.  Eat properly  to manage blood sugars, cholesterol and blood pressure and help you achieve a        healthy weight.

2.  Keep active and understand how exercise affects blood sugar levels.

3.  Prevent diabetes complications well before they happen. This includes damage to your eyes,          kidneys, heart, feet, circulation and sexual response.

New diagnosis jitters

A new diagnosis of diabetes can be overwhelming. It can come with a mix of emotions: shock, confusion, fear, anger. Trying to find information on the internet can make things even more confusing! Your family members, friends and neighbors may try to give you tips too, but this can confuse you even more.

It is impossible to find information that is specific to you, without working with a professional. At this time, you need to get  ACCURATE information, in a supportive environment, so that you feel empowered to get in control of your diabetes. A Certified Diabetes Educator is a medical professional who is specially trained on exactly this. You are always welcome to bring a family member with you to your visits.

Diabetes tune- up:

Have you had diabetes for several years? Maybe even seen a Registered Dietitian when you were first diagnosed? If it has been more than two years since your last education visit, it is time for a tune up.   Diabetes is a chronic disease and treatment will change over time. I will review your eating plan, exercise  plan, blood sugar testing and even provide a new, free glucometer if you need one.     We will also review blood work and make sure that you are up to date on your annual diabetes related preventative tests/ screenings.

Are you at risk for Diabetes?

Did you know that through small changes in weight, diet and exercise, research has shown that someone at risk for diabetes can reduce their risk for developing type 2 diabetes by almost 60%!
NOW is the time to take action, and I want to be your coach!

Why is it important to work with a Dietitian who is also a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE)?  :

“ A Certified Diabetes Educator® (CDE®) is a health professional who possesses comprehensive knowledge of and experience in diabetes management, prediabetes, and diabetes prevention. A CDE® educates and supports people affected by diabetes to understand and manage the condition. A CDE® promotes self-management to achieve individualized behavioral and treatment goals that optimize health outcomes.” -The National Certification Board of Diabetes educators
